Whilst researching some historical sites in Bristol I kept coming across the cover for Martin Scorsese's Bob Dylan documentary 'No Direction Home'. When I looked into it I found that the cover was shot not far from Bristol in a village called Aust. The photo shows Bob at a car ferry terminal that used to operate across the River Severn between Aust and Beachley.
Intrigued - and since it was only 20 minutes drive away (excluding the 10 minutes getting lost) - I thought I'd go take a look.
As well as the ruined ticket office and long overgrown jetty, there is also a concrete causeway that runs to one of the pylons that supports the electricity cables that span the river. The final section of my adventure covered a rocky beach that stretches right to the base of the original Severn Bridge.
